About Us

Hugo and The Hive are a queer indie-folk/rock quartet emerging from Gympie, Queensland, whose raw musicality, emotional songwriting and electric live energy have quickly marked them as one of South-East Queensland’s most exciting young acts. Formed in 2019 through their high school music program, the band began as a creative experiment between friends before evolving into a powerful and deeply connected live outfit.

Made up of Liz (bass), Louie (guitar/vocals), Korbin (guitar/saxophone) and Nat (drums), Hugo and The Hive blend indie rock, folk and pop influences into a sound that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Spacey Jane, Amy Winehouse, Weezer and Greta Van Fleet, the band pairs infectious hooks and vibrant instrumentation with heartfelt storytelling and undeniable chemistry on stage.

When the band uploaded their original demo “Know Me” to Triple J Unearthed High, it quickly caught the attention of the Triple J team. Dave Ruby Howe noted, “That vocal... it sticks out nicely. Still early days but there's something exciting about the raw potential here.” Kath Devaney described the track as having “an unequivocally Australian roots/folk air with 90s indie flair that Frente! would be proud of.” Tommy Faith added, “Future Gympie legends writing songs about unrequited love? You love to hear it! Great to have you as part of this year's Unearthed High.”

Career highlights include opening for Full Flower Moon Band at Horizon Festival, Sunshine Coast (Solbar, 2025), Winning the Gympie Youth Week Battle of the Bands (Under 18s), performances at the Gympie Music Muster and Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival. The band has also built a strong live presence across South-East Queensland, with shows at iconic venues including Solbar, Norton Music Factory, The Cave Inn, and The Junk Bar.

After years of navigating the chaos, growth, and late-night rehearsal rituals of teen band life, refining their craft as a live indie rock act while steadily building an expansive catalogue of original material with songwriting at the heart of the project Hugo and the Hive now prepares to release their long-awaited debut single and EP... 2027
